There's more than one way to open up a Word file

(March 5, 2006) — Dear Nick: I cannot open a Microsoft Word file. I get the following message instead: "Word cannot open the document. Try one of the following: On the File menu, click 'Open' to open the document. Make sure the document has a .doc extension." I have a Dell Dimension 2400 with Windows XP, and I dance the Security Tango every Friday.

Andy Answer: Damaged Word documents are tough because of the proprietary format and because Word thinks it knows better than you. If it runs into just about any little error, it stops. Use openOffice.org...
